Abstract

The paper presents a method of researching the late medieval and early modern street names of Lviv with a
geographic information system. Based on a compiled database of street names, it was found that their own names and the concept of «street» changed. Considering the thesis of researchers of «spatial turn» that the city's names reflect people's ideas about space, it is indicated that the perception of street space until the middle of the XVI century was planar. During the second half of the sixteenth and first half of the seventeenth centuries, the idea of space began to take shape as a linear one.
