Abstract
The article, based on textbook material, analyzes how knowledge about space is formed among students of general secondary education institutions in the fifth grade. The concept of time and space should help students in the assimilation of historical knowledge, because these concepts provide information about the geographical and specific time environment of the life of an individual and entire societies or civilizations. Students of the fifth grade begin to acquire an idea of space from the first topics. Of the 14 textbooks we analyzed for the 5th grade of general secondary education institutions, recommended Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine in 2022, all include material on issues of time and space in the history. The number and logical presentation of the material from these key concepts in history were carried out by the authors in different ways. In some cases, a separate section «Historical time and space» is devoted to these questions, in others they are presented as separate questions. The concept of space is revealed with varying degrees of breadth, mainly it involves understanding the space of human life, its varieties, space as a territorial and social category, the distinction between historical and geographical space, knowledge of maps, the history of their creation, the existence of historical and ethnographic regions in Ukraine, the connection of geographical space and toponymy, knowledge of local history
