Abstract
The formation of the modern Chernivtsi agglomeration took place during the last several millennia as a result of the incessant transforming activity of man in the concrete landscapes of the Prut River valley and its surroundings. The stages of settlement of the urban territory during the last 6 millennia are considered, with a fixation of the intermediate results of the transformation of the natural environment. The succession in settlement and location of settlements can be clearly traced. The anthropogenic transformation of the natural environment took place co-evolutionarily in accordance with the types of landscape and economic systems of each of the stages of the interaction of the natural and social subsystems of the created socio-natural integrity. The development of the urban territory took place selectively and depended on the nature of the landscapes and the intensity of specific types of nature use. The following maps show: the nature of settlement on the background of pre-agricultural landscapes; the degree of development of the Chernivtsi territory at the time of its accession to Austria (1775); modern landscape structure of the city.
